AUA: Semi-robotics ensures a superlative screwdriving process

Even if the freedom "above the clouds" seems limitless, every aircraft must first take off and then land safely again at some point. The landing gear is put under enormous strain every time. Our screwdriver development ensures that the maintenance of the wheels at Austrian Airlines and other partners in the Lufthansa Group is significantly simplified.

Aircraft rubber tires need to be replaced regularly—and that's no "easy" job. It involves a demanding maintenance process, considerable effort, and, above all, precise documentation. Thanks to our sophisticated semi-robotic solution, the bolting of aircraft wheels at the end of the maintenance cycle can now be carried out more quickly and economically.

Rim halves + tires = wheels

A rim consists of two halves that are bolted together. The task is to perfectly connect over 40 different aircraft wheels – from the small Dash 8 to the Airbus 380. In addition, many models also have different bolt circle diameters and numbers of bolts. That is why we have developed a solution in which man and machine work together as a team. After the tire type is entered, the system automatically adjusts to the specific requirements, then tightens two bolts simultaneously and automatically moves on to the next pair of bolts. This saves a lot of time, effort, and money.


Documentation included

Precise records of every single work step are essential in aviation. The task for the AUA shipyard in Schwechat was therefore to develop a machine that simplifies the screwing process and also makes it more reproducible. We did it!
